My Old Blog Archive!

Not really an old blog, but I want to use this one from now on.

I'm such a crazy active blogger it hurts

And lies hurt too.
My loyal subjects, your Amiecuno apologises for the delay in a long awaited blog post! So much has happened in the last month, moving out, realising there's no internet here, damn assisted housing. I should be getting an Internet Dongle soon, my dear mum calls them Toggle Woggles. Bless. She's so computer illiterate even though she worked with them for a long time. She's a fast typist though, i'll give you that, with rarely any errors. Unlike me who tries to type fast, looks at the screen properly then sees tonnes of typos. A journalist's worst nightmare. I mean, how am I gonna be a successful journalist when I do typos? My excuse today is that I am using a borrowed laptop, completely different model to my beloved Ollie, a modern all singing, all dancing laptop with a side number pad (WTF) and Vista. Ugh, I hate Vista, makes me shiver inside. What's so good about Vista? It looks good. That's it. It's slow, and it crashes alot. Yeah, great work, Windows. Stick with XP. My *professional* advice.
C'mon, Mother, text me. Mum's got this brand new phone not even released to the UK yet. It's some kind of Nokia Supernova, rather smart. It's available in China, it's quite a nice slidy-uppy phone, even though I am not a slidy-uppy phone sort of girl.
Anyways, must dash. It's my grandad's birthday and we are to have a birthday celebration. It's also my sister's 16th birthday tomorrow.

Ps. Not sure when the next blog update will be. Probably tomorrow.
Spot the fib.

One By One The Penguins Steal My Sanity

They do, really!
Great day today. Thanks Bekki, Adam & Woolfy. My Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type Three didn't play up that badly today which was good, I was able to walk for 5 minutes without stopping and having to take a break. I was happy with that, I felt free from my disability. I was on my crutches on Monday so to be honest I was pretty surprised I was okay.

Running the server through Manual - Wise move or not?

Because I am the way I am, I thought I might look up the legislation we're being threatened with :)
~Computer Misuse Act, 1990~ (Introduced after the government realised that people had realised there was no law against internet/computer crime, and some rather odd ensuing court cases xD)
Basically, the Computer misuse act is split into three sections. Each section defines an offence. There are numerous subsections. (Despite this it isn't very long)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wi....ki/Computer_Misuse_Act
Section 1 is both the bit we're interested in, and also the most vague/ambiguous.
(Section 2 deals with conventional crimes aided by computer systems, and Section 3 is malicious acts - neither are what *some members* of the 6th form have done)
As far as I can tell, Section 1, (specifically, Section 1, Part 1A) does not specifically prohibit the bypassing of filters. It deals with "intent to secure access to any program or data held in computer" which is an offence so long as such access is "unauthorised". You must also know that such access is unauthorised in order to be charged.
So, to begin with, most people are unaware that the activities they have performed are even illegal. I'm not clear on how much this affects the issue (ignorance is generally a poor defence, but when a law is this ambiguous..)
Anyway, when bypassing filters, we do not secure "unauthorised" access to the school's computers. Possibly to the server routing the internet connection (manuel), which is ostensibly reserved for staff. But note that the law states access to "programs or data held in a computer". Does anyone think that by routing internet traffic through a different server we gain this access to it? (Not that it matters what we think.. I'm being rhetorical)
Shaky ground indeed.
So, the only possible problem is if access to the servers supplying the youtube videos, flash games and occasional useful information is unauthorised - not because the hosts don't want you to see it (why would they?) - but because the school don't want you to. One could argue that the convoluted methods that have become necessary to browse unfiltered are "unauthorised access" - for those of you who don't know, the .zip file works because applications on the C: drive are not blocked, and when a .zip file is browsed, it opens in a temporary folder on the C: drive. As there are methods in place to prevent us accessing the C: drive, this might satisfy the requirements for an offence. But how many of you knew that either? (Remember, you've got to know) And as long as the main program is on a USB drive which you own, we're still in something of a grey area. (And besides, [for those of you who followed the link] it's not as if this access is malicious)
In summary; is it "unauthorised access" to route your internet traffic through Manuel? It may be inconvenient (for the techs/staff), and resource draining, but illegal? Does the failure to comply with the school's "terms of use" (which I can't find to confirm whether this is a violation) constitute unauthorised access?
Surprisingly, Micael's little (read: epic) blunder is much easier to deal with.
Basically, there is no intent. This is required for Section 3 (where unauthorised modification of a computer system [say, an Mbr :P] must be accompanied by "requisite intent and knowledge"). Section 2 is still largely immaterial, as it deals with fraud and counterfeiting, etc. Section 1 still offers only the problem of it's gargantuan ambiguity; did Micael have "unauthorised access" when the Ubuntu installer overwrote the mbr? (and possibly windows too? XD)
I highly doubt a prosecution could be obtained for this one - maybe a small amount of reparations, but overall, just a stupid mistake. (And an incredibly funny one for those who are not Micael)
